It is being reported by Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio that AEW managed a very impressive PPV buy rate, particularly considering how much it cost to buy.
The May 25 show was AEW’s first ever, and if this is the way they’re starting, it’s looking very promising for the new promotion.
Speaking on WOR, Meltzer said:
“The PPV numbers are looking a lot better this week. 98,500 is looking like the lowest possible number. It could be well above that. This is without TV. Once they get TV their PPV numbers are gonna be big. They’ve got momentum. They just keep not failing.”
If the above is true and it is “well above” 98,500, then it would break the record for the highest buy rate for a non-WWE/WCW PPV, which was achieved by ECW for their Heat Wave show in 1999.
Last year’s All In show achieved 55,000 buy ins, suggesting Double or Nothing was nearly twice as popular. For comparison, TNA only very rarely got close to 50,000 buy ins when the promotion was at its peak.
Whichever way you look at it, it’s a very impressive start for AEW, and you would expect these numbers to increase a lot once weekly TV starts in October this year.
