The appointment of Eric Bischoff as the new Executive Director of SmackDown last month was a sensational move by WWE that nobody saw coming.
The hire – along with installing Paul Heyman in the same role on Raw – was Vince McMahon’s attempt to appease concerned stockholders that everything was in hand for WWE to turn around a struggling business.
For the most part it has worked, with stock analysts excited at the prospect of two of the chief architects from wrestling’s last boom period leading WWE’s creative direction.
Although Heyman has been in the job in some capacity for the past two weeks, Bischoff will not take over on SmackDown until July 16, having used the past two weeks to move to Connecticut in preparation for his role.
However, according to Wrestling Observer Radio, some within WWE’s creative team are said to already be unhappy with Bischoff, feeling that he should have spent the last two weeks attending SmackDown to acclimatise himself with the current product and the way the show currently operates.
Those on the staff felt that Bischoff should have been sitting in on creative team meetings and learning the show rather than coming in blind next week.
It will be very interesting to see whether Bischoff is able to turn around early perception of him and make a real impact on SmackDown’s creative direction going forwards.
