The first names have been confirmed for New Japan Pro Wrestling’s upcoming Super J-Cup, which takes place over three days next month.
NJPW announced that SHO, former IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Dragon Lee and former WWE Cruiserweight Champion TJP would be amongst the names competing in the 16-man tournament.
TJP has wrestled for New Japan before, having trained at the NJPW dojo and appearing for the group several times early in his career.
Although those three are the first names confirmed, Will Ospreay, Caristico, El Phantasmo and YOH have been featured in advertising for the tournament and are expected to be part of it.
Jushin Liger – the creator of the Super J-Cup and producer of this year’s event – is also going to be wrestling on all three nights of the tournament but will not be one of the entrants in it.
Expect more names announced for the “international junior heavyweight wrestling festival” shortly. In keeping with the international flavour of the event, many of those expected to be announced will be names not currently under contract with New Japan Pro Wrestling.
The Super J-Cup kicks off on August 22 at the Temple Theater in Tacoma, heads to the San Francisco State University Student Life Event Center in San Francisco on August 24 and concludes at Walter Pyramid in Long Beach the following day.
