On last night’s episode of AEW: Dynamite, Kris Statlander defeated Britt Baker to become the number one contender for Riho’s AEW Women’s Championship.
The match will take place on the first episode of Dynamite in 2020 on New Year’s Day, but according to recent reports, Statlander almost never signed for AEW.
Dave Meltzer reports on Wrestling Observer Radio that she was “very close” to signing a deal with WWE, but AEW came in with an offer which involved more money are instant TV time, something WWE was unlikely to give her.
At just 24, Statlander is considered one of the biggest rising stars in world wrestling, especially when you realise she’s only been wrestling for two years.
Prior to signing with AEW, Statlander competed across America for a variety of promotions, and even appeared on an episode of SmackDown in April 2019, where she was one half of the “Brooklyn Belles”, a jobber team who lost to the IIconics.
It’s fair to say her career has taken a more positive turn since then.
