10. Chris Jericho vs. Cody – AEW Full Gear
As Chris Jericho has continued his career he has risen closer and closer to GOAT status. His career has spanned 30 years and he continues to get better. So, what better way to celebrate that than by looking at the ten most must-see matches from his illustrious career.
The first of which is the most recent on this list. Jericho’s match with Cody at AEW’s Full Gear pay per view was a perfect example of the different levels of storytelling present in AEW compared to WWE. Cody placed the stipulation upon himself that if he lost he would never challenge for the AEW Championship again and thus there was much more at stake than a normal title match. With Jericho taking advantage of Cody’s injured back and lacerated forehead, Cody’s protege MJF tossed in the towel in a fantastic finish.
While much of the emphasis was put on Cody in this match, Jericho showed once again why he is Le Champione.
9. Chris Jericho vs. Tetsuya Naito – NJPW Dominion 2018
After failing to defeat Kenny Omega at Wrestle Kingdom 12, Chris Jericho turned his attention to Tetsuya Naito. Their match at Dominion cemented Jericho as a brawler in New Japan Pro Wrestling. Jericho attacked Naito before the bell and the two fought around ringside with Jericho powerbombing Naito through a table.
When the match began, it was no less violent. Naito was still on top of his game at this time and was one of the best wrestlers in the world, so needless to say the work was top notch. Jericho eventually took advantage of a low blow and nailed Naito with the Codebreaker to capture the IWGP Intercontinental Championship in an absolute shocker.
8. Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels – WrestleMania XIX
There was a time when Chris Jericho named this as his favourite match. Whether it remains in the top spot in his mind, who knows? Facing your favourite wrestler in a show-stealing match at WrestleMania is a very special moment, and he and Shawn Michaels more than delivered.
They had a student vs. teacher type storyline going in 2003 as Jericho was out to prove he had surpassed Michaels. This culminated with their match at WrestleMania XIX where Michaels made his return to the grand stage. Their match featured a ton of symmetry as Jericho copied a number of Michaels’ moves. Eventually, Michaels rolled Jericho up for the pin but the most memorable moment came after the bell.
As Jericho came to grips with the loss, Michaels offered him a handshake. Jericho declined, instead choosing to hug his idol. It seemed like a sweet moment until Jericho punted Michaels low for a heartbreaking WrestleMania moment.
