The main event to this week’s Dynamite saw Cody defend his TNT Championship for the first time in a cracking TV match with Jungle Boy. The match was made after Jungle Boy won a battle royale on the previous week’s episode.
Cody has announced that he will defend his title every week on Dynamite, and his next opponent has been announced as Private Party’s Marq Quen. However, it has emerged that Quen wasn’t AEW’s first choice for the spot.
According to Dave Meltzer on the Wrestling Observer Radio, AEW originally planned to have Fenix face Cody in his second-ever TNT Championship defense. However, once it was clear that Fenix’s ankle injury wouldn’t be fully healed in time for the 06/10 show, plans were changed to give Quen the match.
Nothing against Quen, but the prospect of Cody facing Rey Fenix is far more exciting, and will hopefully be something we get later on down the line once Fenix has fully recovered from his injury. For those that don’t know, the injury was sustained on the go-home episode of Dynamite before Double or Nothing when Fenix faced Orange Cassidy.
Cody announced last week that non-AEW stars will be able to compete for his TNT Championship on Dynamite, so many people have speculated that this is how the promotion will introduce one or more of the released WWE stars that they are looking to bring in.
