The Rock might be one of the most popular and recognisable in not only wrestling, but the wider world right now, but it has emerged that the former WWE Champion wasn’t always the most popular figure backstage.
Bret Hart recently claimed that The Rock was subject to bullying from members of The Kliq who apparently “tried to break him” and get him to quit professional wrestling, and Dwayne Johnson has now commented on not being liked by some backstage.
When speaking about meeting The Undertaker for the first time as part of the “Meeting The Undertaker” show on the WWE Network, Rock confirmed that members of the locker room didn’t want him to win the WWE Championship in 1998:
“This is stuff I’ve never shared but I do want to share it because it’s important. When I started to make the move [up the card] and word got around that the office was priming me for a WWE Championship run, there were a handful of guys in the business at the time who did everything they could to stop that run from happening.”
Someone that was a supporter of The Rock from the beginning was The Undertaker, and Johnson revealed that ‘Taker always had his back. “The Deadman” would even joke about how Dwayne Johnson made it to the top in his 20s:
“He was always so steady, telling me, ‘Don’t worry about it, kid. Just go out and keep doing your thing. You have a hell of a future.’ He would always ask me, ‘you hit 30 yet?’ Every time, I would said ‘no’ and he’d be like, ‘oh, s**t. One day, you will and your bones will be sore.’ I always appreciated that about Mark. It spoke volumes about his integrity and love for the business. And I’ll always be grateful for that.”
