It seems that releasing several wrestlers on April 15 has become a yearly tradition for WWE, as we saw nice stars lose their jobs yesterday, a pretty unpleasant parallel to the same day in 2020.
Samoa Joe, Mickie James, Kalisto, Billie Kay, Peyton Royce, Mojo Rawley, Tucker, Chelsea Green and Wesley Blake were all released yesterday, and it seems WWE isn’t done just yet.
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer noted that the current rumour going around is that more cuts are expected today (April 16), and that they will likely focus on NXT talent, rather than the main roster.
Both Fightful Select and the Wrestling Observer have reported that the reason for these releases was due to “budget cuts”, despite WWE making record profits over the last year.
While there have been fewer releases this year than there were in 2020, which saw a speculated 40% of WWE’s workforce released, it’s no less disappointing to see a number of these names being let go.
There’s no doubt almost all of them will be able to find work once their non-compete clauses expire on July 14, but it’s never nice to see someone lose their job.
We’ll be keeping you updated with any further releases as they are announced.
