On his latest edition of his podcast, Chris Jericho shared the story of founding AEW including some candid discussion of Cody Rhodes.
On his latest edition of Talk is Jericho, Jericho shared the story of the foundation of AEW including some thoughts on current WWE star, Cody Rhodes.
Speaking about Rhodes’ role as EVP in AEW, Jericho felt Cody took it very seriously, noting the decision to not challenge for the AEW World Championship title, was one he didn’t understand.
Jericho said of the decision:
“He was adamant. I’m still not too sure why he you put that rule that he can never challenge for the world title again. For whatever reason, that was completely his idea.
“I guess maybe he wanted people to know that he wasn’t just gonna win the title. He wanted to be the face of the company.”
Jericho went on to note how the EVP aspect of Cody’s role integrated so intrinsically into his on-screen character, saying:
“We’re all faces of the company but he really embraced the EVP part of it. The other guys kind of did it in the shadows, but he was doing it on camera and all that sort of thing.
“So I think he wanted people to understand that he wasn’t gonna take advantage of this position that he was in and he did the ‘I’ll never fight for the world title.’”
Cody Rhodes left AEW in February 2022 amid copious speculation of a WWE return.
He would eventually return to WWE at WrestleMania 38 in April 2022 to face Seth Rollins.
Chris Jericho for his part has been noted as a continued locker room leader with reported chaos backstage.
