A former WWE star has reflected on his release from the company, weighing in on who, in his opinion, was to blame for him being cut.
Erick Rowan, who spent nine years in WWE between 2011 and 2020 was one of many ‘budget cuts’ in the company during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the unfortunate circumstances and timing of the release, Rowan holds the responsibility firmly on his own shoulders for being let go.
The former WWE tag champion told the Heated Shenanigans Podcast:
“If something doesn’t work, I blame myself, I don’t blame creative, I do whatever they ask me to, to the best of my ability.
“If they say talk, I’ll go out there and talk. If they say don’t say a word, I go out there and don’t say a word.
“I try to do things to make myself interesting with whatever parameters they give you.”
Rowan revealed that he had a conversation with Paul Heyman towards the tail-end of his WWE tenure, where he asked if his job was safe, and Heyman implied to Rowan that it was.
However, due to the drastic nature of the pandemic, that proved to not be the case, although for Rowan it set him on a different path that he now is all in on – acting.
Rowan explained that while he was disappointed with his WWE run towards the end, it definitely had a silver lining, saying:
“In my head that was a failure.
“But then I started with the acting stuff and now I’m wrestling a lot more and I think people get too hard on themselves.”
The former Rowan has shown up in AEW several times since his WWE exit under the name Erick Redbeard.
Despite still competing on the indies, Rowan recently reflected on his transition away from wrestling and pursuit of acting following his release – to find out more, click this link.
