WWE Hall of Famer Sgt Slaughter has revealed that CM Punk caused Vince McMahon to make a significant creative change while he was with the company.
Speaking with Sportskeeda’s Bill Apter, Slaughter recalled Vince McMahon scripting promos word for word after Punk swore during a TV segment.
Discussing the incident, Slaughter said:
“I was told that CM Punk was using the F-bomb on live television, and Vince got a little upset about that.
“He just said, ‘That’s it, no more ad-libbing. We’re gonna script everything so I know what people are saying. I’m gonna lose my sponsors and my TV shows if I don’t.’
“So the business went a different direction.”
Reports have indicated that top WWE stars have been given looser promo guidelines since Triple H took over creative in July 2022, but f-bombs on Raw or SmackDown are just as rare.
Punk has been signed to AEW since August 2021.
He most recently competed at AEW X NJPW Forbidden Door, defeating Satoshi Kojima in the first round of the Owen Hart Foundation tournament.
Sgt Slaughter recently explained why he’s unhappy about a certain SmackDown star using his finisher, which you can read more about right here.
