Flip Gordon has admitted that he thought he was going to win the ROH World Championship at the original All In 2018 event.
It seemed fitting that the ROH title was defended at this show, which came to be after Cody Rhodes challenged Dave Meltzer after Meltzer argued that ROH wouldn’t be able to sell out a 10,000 person arena.
At the event, Gordon won a battle royal to earn a shot at Jay Lethal’s ROH World Championship later in the night, but it was ultimately Lethal who walked out of Illinois with the gold.
Speaking with Piers Austin, Gordon argued that it would’ve been an amazing payoff for him to win the ROH World Title at All In.
When Austin said he thought that Gordon was going to win the title match, Gordon said:
Me too… Honestly, not to go into business for myself, but I thought that would have been the biggest payoff personally but that’s just me because my goal is to be ROH World Champion, you know?
“But to me, I’m like, oh, we’ve had just this big pop winning the Over The Top Battle Royal. Oh, and now we’ve just lost. It was like that was my moment.
“If there was any time to put a strap on me, that was the time I had thought. But, I’m fine with whatever, you know what I mean? My bag was a little bit lighter going home (he laughed).
“That’s a heavy belt. That’s a very heavy championship belt.”
Claudio Castagnoli currently holds the ROH World Championship, winning the gold from Chris Jericho at the December 2022 ROH Final Battle event.
Another AEW star has revealed his promise to win a championship, which you can read more about right here.
