Cody Rhodes departed WWE back in 2016 after requesting his release due to creative dissatisfaction with his Stardust character.
Cody’s release came a year after the passing of his father Dusty Rhodes, who was also not happy with his son’s position in the company at the time.
Speaking about his departure in his upcoming American Nightmare documentary, Cody recalled his father saying that he should quit wrestling due to him being stuck as Stardust.
Cody recalled:
“The conversations when I was doing Stardust became so negative and downtrodden, that that was one of the first times he just hit me with the basic, ‘Well, you should quit.’“
Cody’s sister recalled a conversation Dusty had with her, upset that Cody would never be a world champion as Stardust.
She recalled:
“My dad called me and he was upset. He said he’ll never be world champ in this.”
The documentary also showed archived footage from Dusty during his time as a WWE coach, where he spoke about his son, saying:
“I see how talented he is. What are they not seeing here? [It’s] to where you just want to go off, ‘Are you blind?’ But [this is] his dad talking. His dad wants him to be on top.”
The documentary is set to air on Peacock on July 31.
