Honky Tonk Man has commented on Gunther potentially breaking the WWE Intercontinental Championship record and questioned a specific detail.
It has been noted, on WWE programming and on their official website, that Honky Tonk Man had a WWE Intercontinental Championship reign of 453 days.
Gunther, at the time of writing, has a reign of 443 days according to the official WWE website.
Honky Tonk Man has addressed an alleged discrepancy in the numbers during a Highspots virtual signing, saying:
“It’s been interesting. I haven’t really kept up with it, I didn’t know a lot about it. [Fans] ask me about it all the time.
“I don’t know where someone is posting this 453 days. They’re shorting me one day and that’s not fair.
“I got the 454 days from Howard Finkel, he was the one who told me.”
The WWE Hall of Famer won the championship on June 2, 1987 on a show that would be aired on tape delay on June 13 of that year.
He would hold the Intercontinental Championship until SummerSlam on August 29, 1988, losing to The Ultimate Warrior in just 31 seconds.
A quick bit of math shows that there are, indeed, 454 days between June 2, 1987 and August 29, 1988.
The full SummerSlam match can be seen below this news story.
Gunther recently suffered his first loss since joining the main roster, though he retained the championship.
He has also previously addressed the possibility of an on-screen interaction between himself and Honky Tonk Man.
