10 Best Matches Of 2020 So Far

3. Will Ospreay vs. Hiromu Takahashi – NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 14 Day One

We’ve circled back around to Wrestle Kingdom 14. While the second night was very good, the first night was perhaps the show of the year. Will Ospreay had conquered the junior division and there was only one man left to challenge him. That man was the returning Hiromu Takahashi.

Takahashi had spent a year and a half on the shelf with a broken neck but he was the last man to beat Ospreay for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship. Now, he wanted it back. Some wondered if we would get a different Hiromu after his recovery. No, he is still a lunatic. Together, he and Ospreay put on one of the best matches in Tokyo Dome history and one of the best matches of the year.

2. Kazuchika Okada vs. Kota Ibushi – NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 14 Day One

When Kazuchika Okada and Kota Ibushi battled in the G1 Climax it was clear we were getting the appetizer match. They were capable of more. Once Ibushi won the tournament, it was clear we would get the full course at Wrestle Kingdom. Ibushi has yet to capture the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. In many ways, it is his ultimate goal. However, in the biggest situations, he is unable to control his rage and becomes unfocused.

Such was the story of this match with Okada. All Okada had to do was weather the storm of Ibushi and he would retain. After a truly incredible performance, he was able to do just that. As far as Tokyo Dome main events go, this is right up there with the best of the best. However, one match this year topped it.

1. Hangman Page & Kenny Omega vs. The Young Bucks – AEW Revolution

Not enough good things can be said about this match. As wrestling goes, the drama in this match is at an elite level. Everyone in the building was expecting the explosion of The Elite in this match and while tensions grew to unseen levels, the four men left this match with the faction intact.

As far the action, you won’t find many better tag matches ever. Many have called this the best tag team match ever and you can certainly make the argument for it. If you had watched these four men for years in New Japan and Ring of Honor you knew all of the little callbacks done in this match. Whether it be the Golden Trigger from the Young Bucks or the Crossface Chickenwing from Page, you were rewarded for having paid attention.

While anything is possible, it seems unlikely we will see a better match this year.
