8. Kazuchika Okada
Oli Davis: Arguably the greatest wrestler in the world, if not the top two or three is in at number eight here in our list.
Despite him being New Japan’s top champion for the first six months of the year. And wrestling 5 and 5 ½ star matches against Hiroshi Tanahashi. And losing his belt to Kenny Omega in a 7 star match widely considered to be the greatest wrestling match of all time. And he’s in at number eight!
I think it’s because 2018 has been Okada’s year of decline. Not in a bad way, just because he’s been at the top for so long it’s now time to go slightly back down the card again. Which means a lot of the great character work he’s done hasn’t been as celebrated.
His low key split with longtime manager Gedo was a brilliant set up for the larger implosion of Okada’s Chaos faction a few months later. And, more importantly, he dyed his hair a different colour.
