10 Jon Moxley Matches You MUST-SEE

3. Jon Moxley vs. Minoru Suzuki – NJPW The New Beginning in Osaka 2020

On a personal note, this may be my favourite match of 2020 thus far. When Minoru Suzuki issued a challenge to Jon Moxley at Wrestle Kingdom 14, the Japanese audience knew they were in for a treat. At The New Beginning in Osaka, they had a beautiful battle of brutality.

Their styles were made for each other as neither man would step down. Their game of one-upmanship was outstanding as they traded shots and tried to viciously maim the other. On a show that had the fast-paced action of Hiromu Takahashi vs. Ryu Lee, this was the slower, more aggressive battle and the contrast was fantastic.

2. Jon Moxley vs. Juice Robinson – NJPW Best of the Super Juniors Final 2019

This was Moxley’s first match after leaving WWE. He has admitted that he was nervous about wrestling again, not knowing if he had it in him. Leaving WWE was like escaping prison for Moxley and as noted earlier, he was wrestling like a man freed.

He had been in a series of vignettes announcing the arrival of the ‘Death Rider’, tormenting the IWGP United States Champion, Juice Robinson. He and Juice had history dating back to their time in WWE developmental and they had a more aggressive brawl than you would expect for someone’s New Japan debut. Moxley proved in one night that he was more than what WWE gave them. He also did it by winning gold in his debut match.

1. Jon Moxley vs. Tomohiro Ishii – NJPW G1 Climax 29 Day 6

Mouths were salivating at the thought of Jon Moxley facing Tomohiro Ishii when the G1 Climax blocks where announced. Ishii stands as one of the most consistently great wrestlers in the world and one of the most hard-hitting as well. He made a perfect opponent for Moxley and they had a perfect match.

There is a strong argument to be made that this was the best match of Moxley’s career. This match was dynamic, exciting, it had stakes as it was in the G1 Climax, and it gave the Japanese crowd a glimpse of just how great Moxley could be. This is the most must-see match on this list but don’t tune out when the bell rings.

After the match, Moxley cut a short but impactful promo. While many in attendance likely didn’t understand everything he said, Moxley bellowed as if from a mountaintop that there wasn’t anyone in the world that could tell him what he could or couldn’t do and what he could or couldn’t accomplish. This was an inspiring moment to cap off an unbelievable match.
