El Generico becomes Sami Zayn
The year is 2013, and your favourite independent wrestler El Generico has signed with WWE. You are wondering how WWE will book such an ‘indie’ character in their company.
The answer is, they are not. They’re taking the mask off of him and renaming him ‘Sami Zayn’. You moan, because they’re fucking up your favourite indie star. Typical WWE.
In hindsight, this was 100% the correct call. Generico is a fun character, but was never going to work in WWE as it did in ROH. Unshackling the performer behind the character and letting him do his thing was the perfect choice.
Zayn remains one of the most prominent performers in the company even to this very day, and created an iconic moment when he finally captured the NXT Championship in 2014.
