Lets get the formalities out of the way. On paper, with zero previous attachment to either name, “WALTER” and “Gunther” are just as bad as each other.
The circumstances around the change are what makes it awful. First of all, WALTER had been in WWE for three years as WALTER, and even held one of their championships for two god damn years, under the name WALTER. We knew WALTER, we liked WALTER.
Also, yeah the whole nazi shit. WWE originally trademarked ‘Gunther Stark’ as the name for Gunther, until eagle eyed Googlers discovered that was the name of a Nazi general, leading to WWE settling on simply ‘Gunther’.
