If Roman Reigns defeats Sami Zayn at Crown Jewel, it could spell the end for the ‘Undisputed’ WWE Championship as we know it.
Reigns and Zayn are set to face off at Crown Jewel for the Men’s Crown Jewel Championship, with Reigns coming in as World Heavyweight Champion and Zayn as the Undisputed WWE Champion.
There are of course a lot of question marks right now regarding the status of Crown Jewel and its location – and if anyone has the pull to refuse to travel to Riyadh, it’s Roman Reigns – but as far as we know, the match is still set to go ahead as planned.
The problem with the ‘Undisputed’ WWE Championship
The name of the Undisputed WWE Championship has been puzzling for quite a while. Of course, it originates from Reigns defeating Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 38 in 2022, when Reigns entered as Universal Champion and defeated Lesnar in the main event to win the WWE Title.
It was initially known as the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, but the ‘Universal’ was dropped after Cody Rhodes won it from Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 40 in 2024. The ‘Undisputed’ part, however, remained.
This was a somewhat odd decision considering the introduction of the World Heavyweight Championship in 2023, which by its nature, disputes that the WWE Champion is the ‘Undisputed’ champion of WWE – there are now two top champions, one for each brand, not one singular champion on top of the entire promotion.
Why the change would make sense
Now more than ever, that dispute is relevant, because Roman Reigns is the World Heavyweight Champion and Sami Zayn is the Undisputed WWE Champion. It’s no knock on Zayn to point out that Reigns is the bigger star of the two and is positioned that way by WWE.
As such, Reigns is the overwhelming favorite to win their Crown Jewel Championship match, which could provide the perfect opportunity to drop the ‘Undisputed’ title name.
That win would essentially cement Reigns as THE champion and the World Heavyweight Title as THE championship in WWE right now.
With the titles effectively switching places in the hierarchy when it comes to their importance and prestige based on Reigns being the World Champion, it would make perfect sense for Zayn to be known as the WWE Champion going forward, rather than the ‘Undisputed’ WWE Champion.
What it means going forward
There will likely be a time in the future that WWE runs a champion vs champion match and unifies both championships again, perhaps creating the Undisputed WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
However, there are no signs of that coming any time soon – and perhaps it was something Vince McMahon would be a lot more likely to do than Triple H is.
Still, if the company is ever in need of a big match at some point, it’s always one that can be pulled out as an insurance policy for a guaranteed big time main event.
For now though, it would mean the top titles on Raw and SmackDown are on an even playing field, which is the case in reality, instead of one of them claiming to be ‘Undisputed’ when it simply isn’t the case.
