One of the most interesting WWE stories of the past few weeks was regarding Dragon Lee’s future, with it being reported that both Lee and his brother – AEW star Dralistico – have contracts expiring soon.
At the time of writing it is unclear when their deals both expire exactly, but while Dralistico hasn’t been seen on AEW programming since early June, Dragon Lee is being used every single week on Raw and is often putting in match of the night performances when he’s inside the ring.
Following up on his impressive showings against Chad Gable in Mexico City and his three-way against Penta and Dominik Mysterio, Dragon Lee pulled off a big upset win over Big Cass on last night’s Monday Night Raw.
While Cass hasn’t exactly been booked overly strong since his return, it was still a monumental upset on paper given that massive size difference between the two stars, and the crowd in Milwaukee popped big for Dragon Lee scoring the win.
Lee has, in general been getting louder fan support in recent weeks and it appears as if Rey Mysterio’s prediction of the 31-year-old being “the future of lucha libre in WWE” may be coming to fruition – if he stays with the company of course.
Would Dragon Lee be used better in AEW?
As mentioned, Dragon Lee is rarely ever not featured on an episode of Monday Night Raw, and he’s also been a semi-regular visitor of AAA since WWE purchased the promotion last year.
While Lee could certainly do with winning more matches, there are many stars in worse creative positions right now. So, when analysing his options outside WWE – namely AEW – it’s hard to see how they could use him much better right now.
Not every situation is the same, but one must also take a look at AEW’s usage of Lee’s brothers Rush and Dralistico since they signed with the company in 2022 and 2023 respectively.
As mentioned, Dralistico hasn’t wrestled on AEW TV since June, but when he has, it has mostly been on the company’s secondary show Collision, rather than Dynamite – or failing that ROH TV.
Rush has been used far more prominently – even challenging MJF for the AEW World Title back in June – but he also hasn’t been seen in over two months and missed out on the All In London card for the fourth straight year in August.
Again, you can’t say for sure that Lee wouldn’t be booked strong by AEW if he signed, but his brothers’ booking certainly doesn’t inspire confidence.
A recent indication of WWE’s stance on Dragon Lee’s future
In a recent WWE YouTube vlog (see below), Triple H was seen speaking with Dragon Lee backstage after he delivered his breathtaking suicide dive table spot on the September 14 WWE Raw.
The WWE CCO asked Lee to only use the move sparingly because he needs him here “long-term, not short term.”
While this is generally sound advice for Lee’s well being as a human being, it could also give some insight into Triple H’s view of Lee’s potential in the company.
We will await more news on Lee’s contract and provide updates when they become available, but going by recent evidence, it appears as if WWE are doing their best to ensure he sticks around beyond his current deal.
