WWE Flashback: Money in the Bank 2017

2017 Tag Team Championship Match

The New Day (Big E and Kofi Kingston) defeated The Usos (Jimmy and Jey) (c) via Countout – WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championships

This match was the first in a series of matches that many claim made up the best feud of 2017 in WWE, between the Usos and New Day.

Following their successful retention over Breezango at Backlash 2017, Jimmy and Jey claimed there was no team on SmackDown that could defeat them.

New Day then made their first appearance on the blue brand since being drafted in the Superstar Shake-up, and the match was set for Money in the Bank.

After a very entertaining match that went just under 15 minutes, the match ended with the Usos, the heel champions, walking out and taking a countout loss to retain their titles.

This is always a questionable way to end matches, especially good ones, but in hindsight, it allowed the feud to continue and the five men put on classic bouts in many a following month – which we’ll be covering in future editions of ‘Flashback’.

This year, the Usos find themselves without a spot on the card, but one mystery member of New Day will be a part of the men’s Money in the Bank Ladder match – with all rumors and reports pointing to that man being Big E.

As mentioned earlier, the SmackDown Tag Team Championships will be defended tomorrow, with Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson challenging the Bludgeon Brothers, albeit on the pre-show.

At the time of writing, Matt Hardy and Bray Wyatt are not scheduled to defend their Raw Tag Team Championships this year.

No Mid-card Championship Match

Going into Money in the Bank 2017, the WWE United States Champion was Kevin Owens, who competed in the men’s Money in the Bank Ladder match, instead of defending his gold.

This year, the current WWE United States Champion, Jeff Hardy, won’t defend his title, due to a number of factors. These include recent injury concerns, lack of room on the card, and lack of an interesting program going into the event.

Conversely, Raw‘s WWE Intercontinental Champion, Seth Rollins, will defend the ‘Workhorse Championship’ against Elias.
