Mae Young Classic night two review

Kacy Catanzaro vs. Reina Gonzalez

Next up, Kacy Catanzaro had her first match against South Texas’ Reina Gonzalez. Gonzalez is currently under contract in NXT and competed in last year’s Mae Young Classic. Catanzaro, however, was seen in the ring for the first time. She is instead an alumna of American Ninja Warrior, where she made waves as the first woman to complete the finals course.

At only 5 feet tall, Catanzaro had to overcome over a foot of height difference to challenge her 6’1″ competitor. However, from her entry climbing directly up the turnbuckle, the ninja showed that her unique skillset would factor into the match.

Gonzalez demonstrated her strength well from the start. However, Kacy showcased her extraordinary acrobatics in her fighting style. Her gymnastic talent was a fantastic fit in a classic David-and-Goliath setup.

Catanzaro’s fellow New Jerseyan Liv Morgan was in the crowd for support (surprisingly normal looking, blue tongue aside) along with her Riott Squad partner Sarah Logan. Perhaps their support worked, as Catanzaro’s spinning and flying moves defeated Reina Gonzalez in the end.

Gonzalez seemed to be looking for a post-match fight, but in a surprising turn of respect lifted the victorious Catanzaro to her shoulders.

If you ask me, this is going to be the first of many memorable moments for Kacy Catanzaro. Keep an eye out for her in NXT, and eventually the main WWE roster, in the next few years.
