Life as a wrestler was hard. A lot of fans understand the little pay independent wrestlers receive and this was the case in Siki’s day. In his first match he was paid $11.50 and after this would be lucky to make $20 per match. In Siki’s documentary, Sweet Daddy Siki he would explain how hard the life of a wrestler was at this time. Praying while making his 400-mile trips back home after a match he hit a rabbit or stumbled across roadkill to eat only to never get the chance. Siki would have to rummage through garbage bins behind restaurants for food to eat.
While financially Siki hadn’t become the star-making the big checks that he had hoped he developed a persona that would land huge. Referring to himself as ‘Sweet Daddy’ after a few female fans from ringside gave him the moniker this character only made him a bigger star after meeting Buddy Rogers in Ohio.
Nature Boy Buddy Rogers was the NWA’s brightest shining star. Siki wrestled on the same card in Chicago, Illinois at Comiskey Park where Rogers defeated Pat O’Connor to capture the NWA World’s Heavyweight Championship.
