Clarification On Ex-WWE Star Claiming Brock Lesnar Didn’t Want To Do Business In Major Match WWE

Matt Riddle has provided some clarification in his previous comments about Brock Lesnar going into business for himself at Royal Rumble 2022.

Riddle previously claimed that he had been told he was winning the 2022 Royal Rumble match before Brock Lesnar didn’t want to do business, noting the following in a Signed By Superstars virtual signing (transcription via Fightful):

“I was told at one point I was going to win the Rumble (in 2022) and then Bobby Lashley beat Brock Lesnar, hit him with the belt.

“Brock came in, didn’t want to do business with everybody and said he was winning. Nobody stood up to him. I didn’t either.”

Riddle has since appeared on the Kurt Angle Show, where he went into more detail about what he meant.

Matt Riddle noted that Lesnar doesn’t have any creative control, but stated that ‘people can be very influential’.

Noting that nothing’s a guarantee in WWE, Riddle said (transcription via WrestlingNews.co):

“I wouldn’t say (Brock Lesnar prevented him from winning the match), right, listen, doesn’t write the script. Anybody that’s been in the back knows people can be very influential.

“I’m not gonna say I was guaranteed to win because anybody that’s wrestled in WWE (knows) nothing’s guaranteed. I had a United States Title that was supposed to keep (that) I lost it, me and Randy (Orton), we’re supposed to turn on each other. We didn’t.

“A lot of things are told to you and don’t happen, and other things happen. But yes, at one point, I was told it was a possibility that (inaudible) the Rumble and that I was gonna do a triangle to Brock and this and that. And when Brock came in the back, and Brock is Brock, there’s no I have no hard feelings.

“He just did the job to Bobby. He goes, ‘Hey, you guys got to do business for me. I did this good business for Bobby, and we do good business for me.’ And we’re like, ‘All right, (what are) you’re gonna do,’ and everybody was like, ‘Okay,’ and that’s what we did. We sat in, and we did our jobs.”

There were notably several different reports about Matt Riddle’s Royal Rumble plans in February 2022 following the event.

While PWInsider reported that Riddle was originally set to win the bout and was always the frontrunner to win before Brock Lesnar was added to the equation, Fightful had reported that Brock Lesnar had been pencilled in to win the 30-man match at least two weeks prior to the event.
