Former WWE star Matt Riddle has claimed that he was told that he was going to win the 2022 Royal Rumble match, claiming that plans were changed because of Brock Lesnar.
Riddle had been gaining popularity as part of his RK-Bro tag-team with Randy Orton in the lead-up to the 2022 Royal Rumble match.
While Riddle and Orton competed in the bout, they were both ultimately eliminated by the eventual winner Brock Lesnar, who was a surprise entrant in the match after losing his WWE Championship to Bobby Lashley earlier in the night.
Speaking in a Signed By Superstars virtual signing, Riddle claimed that he was told at one point that he was going to win the Rumble.
Riddle said:
“I was told at one point I was going to win the Rumble (in 2022) and then Bobby Lashley beat Brock Lesnar, hit him with the belt.
“Brock came in, didn’t want to do business with everybody and said he was winning. Nobody stood up to him. I didn’t either.”
There were notably several different reports about Matt Riddle’s Royal Rumble plans in February 2022 following the event.
While PWInsider reported that Riddle was originally set to win the bout and was always the frontrunner to win before Brock Lesnar was added to the equation, Fightful had reported that Brock Lesnar had been pencilled in to win the 30-man match at least two weeks prior to the event.

Following his WWE release in September 2023, Riddle made an appearance via video at NJPW New Year Dash to issue a challenge to NJPW WORLD TV Champion Hiroshi Tanahashi.
An update has emerged on Riddle’s future with NJPW, which you can read more about right here.
