Cody Rhodes Addresses Mistakes As AEW EVP AEW

Cody Rhodes has addressed the mistakes he believed he made while serving as Executive Vice President at AEW.

Rhodes was speaking to Ryan Satin on the Out of Character podcast when he made the comments.

Satin recalled that Cody Rhodes had told Nick Hausman during the post-Wrestlemania scrum that he wasn’t mature enough for an EVP role.

The American Nightmare clarified what he meant by the statement, saying:

“I was very active and I did start a department, a community department. Brandi (Rhodes) did bring Kulture City into the wrestling and sports entertainment space.

“So, we were very active in terms of all the facets and assets of that gig. But, I think that job was meant for… we wanted a wrestling company brought you by wrestlers.

“For sure, that’s a huge part of the mission… but maybe it would’ve been better served for me at age 45 than it did at age 33 or whatever it was.”

Cody Rhodes went on to say that it was hard negotiating his performer role with his responsibilities as an EVP.

He seemingly regretted ‘boxing’ himself out of winning an AEW title, saying it was difficult to toe the line between being “the best wrestler in the world on television” and being fearful that he would “offend colleagues because I am also their boss.”

He explained:

“I am just now entering the prime of my career. So to make political decisions like boxing myself out of winning a world championship… those decisions in hindsight were not the correct decisions and what I should’ve been doing.”

Cody Rhodes explained that he tried to land somewhere in the middle of the two roles.

Since joining WWE, the pressure of an EVP role is a thing of the past.

Rhodes said:

“There was only so much of playing in the middle that I could do and now I’m not in charge of nothing other than me and being a pro wrestler.”

Cody Rhodes made his return to WWE during WrestleMania 2022 after a six-year absence from the promotion.

He is currently recovering from a torn pectoral muscle and shared details of his rehabilitation recently.

A return date has not been confirmed, but the injury has been said to keep Rhodes out of action for nine months.
