Cody Rhodes Reveals ‘So Dark’ Footage He Didn’t Watch

WWE released it’s new documentary ‘American Nightmare: Becoming Cody Rhodes’ documentary on Peacock today, and it features a lot of archived footage from Cody’s career.

From his early WWE days to his days in AEW, most of the footage was chosen by Cody himself, but he has revealed on segment he called ‘so dark’ that he never watched when viewing the documentary.

Speaking to Variety, Cody was asked if there was any footage in the documentary he was surprised made it in, with him naming an interview he did on Stephen Amell prior to SummerSlam in 2015 as Stardust.

Cody detailed the segment, saying he was still grieving from the passing of his father when recording it, and he doesn’t even remember the segment.

He said:

Ben Houser from ESPN and Matt Braine from WWE, our outstanding director, they kept me in the loop on a great deal of things and asked me for a lot of what I wanted in there and what was important to me. But there was a piece that I would never watch when I got a screener or anything like that. And it’s an interview before SummerSlam, where I wrestled Stephen Amell as Stardust. And they’ve got that whole interview in this documentary. I don’t even remember it, but it’s so dark. And it’s okay to be put in this package because there’s a resolution to it. But at the time that was someone very much struggling with grief.

“Dealing with the death of my dad was such a shock to our family. Dealing with that grief and how poorly I was dealing with it is on full display in that interview. And it’s one of those where even when I saw it at the premiere, I really just almost kept my head down just because you don’t want to find yourself back in that spot. Maybe that’s something that people can see from this is that’s a really low point, a rock bottom, and we were able to dig out, but that that piece of it surprised me to see that interview in its totality.”

The documentary featured footage from Being The Elite from Cody’s time on the show, which was approved for use by the Young Bucks. You can see a clip of the segment about AEW here.
