The way that Cody Rhodes has handled being a top star in WWE has been revealed by a renowned Hall of Famer.

Since returning to WWE in April 2022 at WrestleMania 38, Cody Rhodes has been a prominent figure, with multiple high profile media appearances, whether he was holding a championship or not.

During a recent appearance on Wrestling Life Online, Diamond Dallas Page revealed conversations he’d had with Rhodes as he sought to “finish his story” at WrestleMania and what he would do if it wasn’t the time for that to happen.

DDP would also share an insight into how Rhodes is handling being the top guy in WWE, with the responsibility of carrying the company on his back.

Discussing how fans’ opinions can so easily change when you reach the top of WWE, DDP recalled advice Cody received from 17-time world champion John Cena:

“They love you, and then they hate you, or they just wanna f**k with you. It’s like with Roman and John Cena, now Cody’s feeling a little bit of that too.

“John Cena gave him a really good piece of advice. He told (him) ‘Just be you.’ Because that’s the person: if someone says he’s gonna do something, that’s the guy who’s going to follow up on it, and he’s not going to appease you.

“I’m really excited to see what he’s done since that, and the journey he’s been on, being in that spot where you are carrying the company on your back. He loves it.”

Rhodes heads to SummerSlam as a former Undisputed WWE Champion, having lost the title to Sami Zayn at Night of Champions in the Triple Threat that also featured GUNTHER.

The Weight of the World

Following his departure from WWE, Cody Rhodes would go on to arguably greater heights, enjoying a successful independent wrestling run, a tour of NJPW and being a founding father of AEW.

Popular with the AEW fanbase, things would change as the very people who adored him turned their back on him in a vocal way, particular towards the end of his tenure.

Rhodes would state that he “was a heel and the fans were amazing” when asked on Twitter if the issue that saw him depart was that he was being booed. Addressing his departure, Rhodes would merely state it was a “personal matter” that saw him part ways with AEW.

There was certainly a burden on Rhodes as an AEW star and executive, something that was no doubt on the shoulders of the other EVPs, yet Rhodes was able to carry that weight alongside The Young Bucks, Kenny Omega and Tony Khan.

Following in the footsteps of cross-media exemplars such as Roman Reigns and John Cena, both top guys in the WWE for many years, Rhodes had a high bar to reach and has arguably exceeded it on multiple occasions since his return.

A consummate professional who excelled beyond WWE, Rhodes was able to bring all he’d learned during his initial run, his time on the independent scene without the backing of the monolithic company, and from his business dealings in AEW and beyond to his current standing.
