IMPACT Recap: May 17 – June 14, 2018

Drake Is (Still) Great

I see Drake as in a rebuilding phase right now. They tried something with the Tag Team Titles, but honestly, it was stupid. I maintain, Scott Steiner should not hold a championship in any televised wrestling promotion. I don’t care if he goes to the Indies and plays around with titles, that can be fun for everyone – because the continuity is a lot less important – but having it stuck on a guy like him was just simply a bad idea. Anyway, I don’t have to talk about that anymore, because hopefully I won’t have to see his face anymore.

Drake beat Steiner in a match that was ‘fine’. It had some callbacks to things that have happened during their brief friendship, and it gave both characters an opportunity to show their heelish tendency.

The next week, Drake gave the list of his “Top 5 Dummies”.

I maintain that Eli Drake is the best mic worker in the company, and he needs to be given as much room to work as possible. He was given the time and space but unfortunately, the crowd just didn’t sound that into it. I do wonder how the WWE Universe would react if they had Drake doing the same kind of thing, I suspect it would be similar to the way they react for The Miz.

The fans were obviously on the list, twice in fact, with Austin Aries and Moose being the most notable names to join them (the management were on there too, but I don’t see that going anywhere). Moose and Drake are going to face each other next week for a shot at Austin Aries and the World Title.

I don’t know how that match is going to turn out, but I’ve got a bad feeling that Drake won’t come out on top – and we are going to end up with boring-old-Moose getting the shot at the title.

Losing Sleep Over A Losing Streak

I could probably just say “LAX Suck” and be done with it, but I like the fact there is more to this story, even if it isn’t obvious what that might be.

Since losing the titles to…*Takes deep breath*… Eli Drake and Scott Steiner, LAX haven’t been doing so well in the Tag Division. Losing streaks aren’t taken advantage of in wrestling enough. Curt Hawkins, over in WWE, is by far the king of the losing streak right now – but any story about a losing superstar or team has a lot of potential for entertainment.

The addition of external pressure on them to win is a great touch because now they aren’t just fighting for themselves. It’s bold of me to say, but seeing them wrestle more and giving them a story might actually make me like them… I know, it’s crazy talk.

More recently, LAX managed to finally score a victory over the Cult of Lee. The match was great, but the progression of the story of LAX was by far the more important thing to take away from the latest episode of Impact. Diamante is back.

There are obviously tensions building up in the faction, and I’m intrigued to see where this story takes us.

It’s been a strong month for Impact, and perhaps taking a step back has made me realize that the promotion isn’t all that bad. It had definitely lost some steam back there, but I am quite excited about a lot of the story developments they are making.
