June 27, 2002 was a big day for WWE, because it was the day a certain young man called John Cena made his debut for the company, answering an open challenge from Olympic gold medallist Kurt Angle.
Fast forward nearly 17 years and John Cena is arguably the most popular performer WWE has ever produced, and Kurt Angle is back with the company, seemingly on the verge of retirement.
So, as Kurt Angle effectively brought John Cena into the ring, could Cena be responsible for retiring the man he debuted against? Well, both men are still as of right now scheduled to appear at WrestleMania, and with neither man currently feuding with anyone, wouldn’t it just make sense?
There have been plenty of rumours, including speculation from Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, that this is indeed the route WWE are planning on going, and it would certainly have the star power a retirement match for Kurt Angle deserves.
As we know, being retired from WWE isn’t the same as being retired from any other company, so we’ll probably see him back next year, but as an initial retirement, you can’t really think of anyone better than Cena.
