Former WWE Star Thought He Was Going To Get An AEW Offer AEW

Matt Cardona has commented on his current contract status, discussing his short stint in AEW.

The former ‘Zack Ryder’ was let go by WWE in April 2020, after almost 15 years with the company.

His first major wrestling appearance following his WWE departure was for AEW, during the pandemic. Cardona teamed with Cody Rhodes to defeat Alex Reynolds & John Silver on the July 30, 2020 edition of Dynamite.

He returned to the ring for AEW at that September’s All Out pay-per-view, teaming with Dustin Rhodes, QT Marshall & Scorpio Sky to face Brodie Lee, Colt Cabana, Evil Uno & Stu Grayson.

Cardona has since wrestled for a number of notable promotions including IMPACT Wrestling, NWA and GCW.

Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Cardona stated that he enjoys being his own boss, and not being tied down anywhere.

Admitting that he thought he was going to be offered an AEW deal after wrestling for the promotion, Cardona said:

“Well, I mean, the AEW thing, listen, it’s not like they offered me a deal and I turned it down. That’s not what happened. What happened? I don’t exactly know. I did a couple shows there. I thought I was gonna be offered something, I wasn’t.

“Okay, now I gotta move on, you know? I just don’t want to be tied down anywhere. In WWE, not that had handcuffs on by any means, but I was there for so long. That’s when I was 20 years old, when did we get fired? 2020.

“So I was there for like 14 years, it’s a long time. So now it’s my chance to make my own schedule and be my own boss and branch out and do all these other things.

“Whether it be grow the Major Wrestling Figure podcast, or, you know, I just did the last match musical, I did a musical, you know, all these things I’m getting to try now.

“I just don’t want to be tied down anywhere. I don’t want to (go) ‘Hey, Okay, can I do this?’ I don’t want to do that.”

Cardona recently poked fun at a detail in a report about WWE’s interest in rehiring him and his wife Chelsea Green.
