Scrapped Championship Win Plans For Released WWE Star Revealed WWE

Backstage details have emerged on huge nixed plans for Mustafa Ali on NXT prior to his WWE release.

Ali was one of a number of names let go by WWE during the September round of talent cuts.

Many fans were confused by Ali’s departure, as the talent was set to challenge for Dominik Mysterio’s North American Championship at NXT No Mercy.

Not only did Trick Williams take Ali’s place, Williams actually defeated ‘Dirty’ Dom at the September 30 premium live event to win the North American Title.

Per Fightful Select, the original plan called for Mustafa Ali to win the North American Championship before he was let go, which was reportedly one of the reasons why NXT higher ups were frustrated by the decision to release him.

The report noted that ‘sources with knowledge on the situation’ confirmed that Ali was set to interfere in the Mysterio vs Dragon Lee North American Title bout on the September 25 edition of Raw.

Ali was reportedly set to cost Lee the match, leading to a threeway match between Mysterio, Ali and Lee for the North American Title at No Mercy, which Ali would’ve won.

Fightful also stated that Shawn Michaels, Mustafa Ali and NXT creative had Ali factored into tentative creative plans up to March 2024.
