NJPW G1 Climax 36 Tournament Winner Crowned

A first-time winner was crowned during this year’s NJPW G1 Climax tournament, which concluded on Sunday, August 16.

Following a month of tournament action, the G1 Climax 36 tournament is now over, with the final taking place at Ryogoku Sumo Hall in Tokyo.

The final saw Ryohei Oiwa face off against Yuya Uemura, with neither having won the tournament before.

Oiwa ultimately won the match, defeating Uemura after 35 minutes of action to be crowned the G1 Climax 36 champion.

Summarising the closing moments of the match, NJPW shared the following:

Oiwa denied the Deadbolt Suplex and immediately returned to the Big Rock. Even after Uemura escaped with a back suplex, Oiwa refused to release his grip, continuing to squeeze the life out of his opponent. The Heat Storm dug deep and finally escaped, hitting the Deadbolt Suplex. Just as he had the previous night against Yota Tsuji, Uemura followed with the Shining Elbow, but missed the Lion Shiner, giving Oiwa another opportunity to reapply the headlock.

Oiwa went for the Grip once again, but Uemura countered into an armbar. The pressure remained on Oiwa’s arm as Uemura transitioned into another wristlock, but a second Tenzan Suplex allowed Oiwa to escape. The Grip finally connected, but Uemura refused to stay down.

Oiwa locked in the Big Rock once more, cranking down on Uemura’s neck. This time, the Heat Storm had nowhere left to go. Yuya Uemura submitted, making Ryohei Oiwa the winner of G1 Climax 36.

Ryohei Oiwa finished block action with 12 points in the A-block. He was technically the A-block runner-up, with Yota Tsuji also scoring 12 points, but winning the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Oiwa defeated Callum Newman in their semifinal match to advance to Sunday’s final. Uemura had put away Tsuji to meet Oiwa there.

Both AEW stars in the tournament just missed out on advancing as runners-up in their blocks, with both Konosuke Takeshita and Gabe Kidd finishing with 12 points in the A and B blocks respectively, but missing out on the semifinals due to the head-to-head tiebreakers.

Oiwa has now earned a shot at the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. Yota Tsuji currently holds the gold, winning it back from Callum Newman at Dominion in June.
