With the end of the year approaching, more details about the John Cena Classic have emerged, with the WWE star himself sharing an insight.
Announced at Backlash earlier this year, the John Cena Classic was described as a main roster vs. NXT star event, with fans choosing the champion.
More recently, a date was reported for the event, with December 12 being in the plans, although a location was yet to be revealed. Cena has previously been coy when it comes to sharing details.
While a date is yet to be officially confirmed, John Cena has stated that it will be taking place in December, and shared an insight into the Classic during an appearance on Today, saying:
“This year in December, I’m really excited about announcing the John Cena Classic.
“So we’re gonna do an event, based off of all the memory, all the nostalgia, the IP (intellectual property) and the core values of the character, which is me: Hustle, loyalty, respect, perseverance, virtue, overcoming the odds and giving the vote to the people.
“Our audience is gonna decide our champion on that night, so it’s a really unique… event. I don’t even know if it’s gonna work. I’m still taking bold chances in the WWE space, and I’m proud to be helping the John Cena Classic.”

The interview sees Cena describe the Classic as a “really unique live event”, although it’s entirely possible he says “unique vibe”, for its tone and delivery.
Assuming that the John Cena Classic, as an event, is taking place on December 12, this would be the same day as Wrestlepalooza: Perth, which takes place a year after the star retired at Saturday Night’s Main Event last year.
An event that doesn’t sound like Wrestlepalooza
Announced in August of this year, Wrestlepalooza takes place in Perth on December 12, with the event bookended by SmackDown and Raw in Australia.
The veteran WWE star describing the John Cena Classic as “an event” does suggest that it will be a standalone instance, potentially casting doubt on the idea of it taking place during Wrestlepalooza. That’s not to say that the John Cena Classic won’t make up the card at Wrestlepalooza, just that the star’s description makes it sound like something on its own.
At the time of writing, details are still thin on the ground when it comes to the John Cena Classic and which main roster or NXT stars will be involved, or whether the invite would stretch to TNA talent.
Saturday Night’s Main Event: John Cena’s Final Match saw main roster and NXT stars compete on a card of exhibition matches, with the then-X Division Champion Leon Slater being the only TNA Wrestling star to feature.
