Report: Cody Rhodes ‘Losing All Booking Responsibilities’ Key Factor In AEW Departure AEW

A change in the backstage dynamic in AEW played a huge role in Cody Rhodes choosing to leave the promotion.

According to Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, a key factor in Cody’s departure was “losing all responsibilities involving booking”.

The report explains the decision for Tony Khan to take full rein over creative in AEW played a role in Rhodes making the eventual decision to leave.

The report reads:

That is a role where Khan, who is the head of creative, has taken full rein. Originally, Rhodes was part of that process. As great as Dusty Rhodes was as a performer, his contributions as a booker are an integral part of his legacy.

For Rhodes, AEW represented another chance to pay homage to his father as a booker while also further cementing his own legacy. Losing that opportunity in AEW hurt Rhodes more than any loss he suffered in the ring.

There had been plenty of discussion regarding the relationship between Cody and the rest of the AEW executive vice presidents over the past year.

Tony Khan has admitted that he took full control over creative in the beginning of 2020 with the EVPs contributing in other ways.

As previously noted, multiple sources reported that financial disputes and another incident between Rhodes and Tony Khan played a contribution to his eventual departure.

We will have further updates on Cody Rhodes when they become available.
