Rey Mysterio and Sami Zayn will meet in singles action for the first round of the 2021 King of the Ring tournament on SmackDown.
In recent months, Zayn has defeated Dominik Mysterio three times one-on-one. On Friday (October 8), Rey will have the chance to put Zayn away on behalf of the Mysterio family.
The bout was announced on WWE.com, with WWE noting:
“The King of the Ring Tournament kicks off this Friday and pits Rey Mysterio against Sami Zayn in a first-round showdown!
Tensions have risen between Rey and his son Dominik during Dominik’s three recent loses to Zayn. Find out what happens when The Legendary Luchador goes head-to-head with The Master Strategist this Friday at 8/7 C on FOX.”
In a recent interview, Zayn named Rey Mysterio his last dream opponent. Confident he can defeat the ‘greatest luchador of all time’, Zayn took to Twitter following the announcement, writing:
“Looking forward to facing the greatest luchador of all time tomorrow night. Also looking forward to advancing in the #KingOfTheRing tournament.”
As well as a SmackDown Women’s Championship contract signing segment, a first-round Queen’s Crown tournament match was also announced for Friday’s episode of SmackDown.
