Tony Khan Says Former WWE Champion Reached Out To Join AEW AEW, WWE

Tony Khan has revealed that a multi-time former Champion reached out to him in order to join AEW following their departure from WWE.

AEW has proven to be a popular destination for former WWE stars since its inception in 2019.

While this has been a point of criticism levied at Khan by some fans, it seems that it is not always the AEW President himself who is pursuing those formally employed by WWE, rather they are approaching him about joining.

As revealed by Khan in a recent interview with Going Ringside, this was the case for the Rated R Superstar Adam Copeland, who joined AEW at the WrestleDream pay-per-view on October 1; just a day after the former Edge’s contract with with WWE had expired.

Khan explained how Copeland’s signing came about and how he feels about having the Hall of Famer in the company:

“I think the timing of it was we had a pay-per-view October 1st and it was right around then Adam Copeland’s contract expired.

“He reached out to me, and also really for me, the timing of it made a lot of sense to have Adam Copeland come into AEW.

“He’s one of the greatest wrestling stars in the world. I believe Adam Copeland is somebody who still delivers the best matches and brings fans from all over the world to AEW, so it’s an honor having Adam Copeland in AEW.

‘The Rated R Superstar’ has renewed his rivalry and his great history with Christian Cage, the Patriarch of AEW, the TNT Champion, and having those two in AEW, it’s something really special.”

Although Copeland has no shortage of accolades to his name from his time in WWE, he recently captured his very first championship outside of the company, winning the TNT Championship from Christian Cage at AEW Worlds End on December 30.

However, this was of course extremely short-lived as Cage won the title right back following the use of Killswitch’s (Luchasaurus) number one contender contract he had earned earlier the same night.

Despite the disappointment, Copeland bounced back on this week’s Collision, (January 6) defeating Griff Garrison.
