Was John Cena’s Undertaker Call-Out “Hokey”?

Looking at the online feedback from last week’s episode of Raw, it was generally accepted that John Cena had produced another promo that makes us appreciate exactly how good he is with a mic in his hand.

Teasing that his road to WrestleMania 34 would be one of a fan, jumping into the Detroit crowd, stealing a sip of beer from an impressively hairy man, Cena then headed back to the ring to get round to his real purpose – challenging the Undertaker to a match on the ‘Grandest Stage of Them All’.

However, at least one man didn’t appreciate the approach Cena took when calling out ‘Taker and that man is WWE Hall of Famer Edge.

Speaking with Christian on E&C’s Pod of Awesomeness, Edge said:

“So, the John Cena promo, I thought it was pretty hokey, I’m not going to lie. It was very, um… it was cool at some points, but then it was very… I don’t know, just a very hokey delivery. And I know that’s kinda Cena’s schtick sometimes but it just didn’t feel like this was the moment or the opponent for that, I think. That was my gut when I watched it. Yeah, I don’t know, I don’t know.”

“I think that’s a huge, massive match and I’m glad the crowd reacted the way they did and I didn’t even mind the going into the crowd thing and I get the way they’re trying to set this up with like if he doesn’t have this match, he doesn’t have this match, he doesn’t have this match, well then he’ll go in as paying audience. I guess it was just when it got to the Undertaker stuff… it just didn’t feel like quite as… I don’t know. I don’t even know how to put my finger on it. I guess it’s just sometimes that kind of hokey delivery can kind of work, but in that instance, it just didn’t work for me.”

Edge is obviously a very difficult man to please! Sure, it wasn’t the most traditional way of getting the ‘Dead Man’ back into the ring for his annual WrestleMania outing. Saying that, there’s obviously not much time left to build up a compelling angle now so I thought Cena did the best with the situation presented to him – what did you guys reckon?

Let’s just hope that we see something substantially better than “hokey” by the time April 8 comes around.
