The WWE United States Championship picture has been eventful, to say the least, post-WrestleMania 34 with Jinder Mahal winning the belt in a Fatal Four Way on the ‘Grandest Stage’.
Randy Orton became the number one contender by defeating Rusev on the following Smackdown which reignited the feud between the ‘Viper’ and the ‘Modern Day Maharaja’ we so desperately craved.
This (thankfully) didn’t come to fruition as Jinder lost the US Title to Jeff Hardy during Raw‘s edition of the Superstar Shake-up. Hardy also won the rematch at Greatest Royal Rumble and this now allows Orton to rightfully get his shot at the belt against Hardy at Backlash.
Last night’s SmackDown Live saw the rivalry step up a level as Orton RKO’d Hardy after a tag team win over The Miz and Shelton Benjamin. The initial respect between the two didn’t last long with the ‘Viper’ making it perfectly clear that he is all business ahead of Sunday.
This will be the first pay-per-view match between the two since the Royal Rumble 2008 which was the end of a short-lived but memorable feud. The build-up included one of Jeff Hardy’s biggest feats of athleticism that was jaw-dropping even by his standards.
Shelton Benjamin has also played an important role in the build-up to Backlash as he picked up a win over Orton on last week’s SmackDown Live and interfered in the Miz TV segment between Orton and Hardy. Don’t be surprised if Benjamin also plays a part in affecting the finish of Sunday’s match.
