Finn Balor has revealed that he thinks a match between ‘The Demon’ and ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt may have been in WWE’s plans.

Bray Wyatt passed away at the age of 36 on August 24, 2023, leaving behind a legacy that is still spoken about to this day.

During a recent appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Finn Balor addressed whether fans were ever close to seeing a match between ‘The Demon’ and ‘The Fiend’, with Balor suggesting that it may have been on the cards.

Whilst discussing the possibility of two of WWE’s most memorable alter-egos clashing, Balor also touched upon the bout between ‘The Demon’ and ‘Sister Abigail’ at WWE TLC 2017, which was scrapped due to Bray suffering an illness.

“Yeah, I think that was certainly in the works, and something that I always think about and look back on and say, I’ve been very lucky to have had almost every match that I’ve ever wanted to have.

“But that’s one that I didn’t get to have, and we almost got Sister Abigail versus the demon, and Wyndham had gotten sick a couple of days before we had to switch that match out at short notice.”

Plans would shift, with Balor facing AJ Styles at the Premium Live Event, something that Finn would reflect upon fondly, saying:

“AJ is someone who I’ve looked up to my whole career, someone who I’ve admired. You can kind of look up to people, but not really relate to them, like, you know, I’ve always looked up to John Cena as the pinnacle of being like a WWE superstar, but I don’t really relate to him, in the sense of our journeys have been slightly different, the way we work is different. But AJ, I feel like we’re very, very similar. I was just like a couple years behind them, so someone who I’ve always like admired and aspired to be like. So getting to go in the ring with AJ that night was absolutely amazing.”

Styles wasn’t the only star to see praise from Balor, who shared his honest thoughts on CM Punk having previously heard “horror stories“.

The Fiend vs. The Demon

Two well-defined alter egos in the hands of two confident, creative and talented stars, ‘The Demon’ vs. ‘The Fiend’ is a match that will only live on in the realm of “what if?”

This wasn’t just thrown together booking, with Balor and Wyatt having worked together extensively throughout 2017, particularly on the SummerSlam Heatwave Tour and a variety of house shows. Even the following year, the pair would cross paths again on the WWE Live circuit.

Sadly, it was not to be, with their last broadcast singles match that year being at No Mercy in September 2017, a match that Balor would win, repeating the success he had at that year’s SummerSlam.

Two years later however, Balor was the opponent for the debut of Bray’s ‘Fiend’ character at SummerSlam 2019, however, it was not under his own ‘Demon’ persona.

‘The Fiend’ won that match in quick fashion, before swiftly moving on from Balor and into the WWE Universal Title picture.

‘The Fiend’ was a creative entity like no other in WWE, with Wyatt’s passion for every aspect of his persona realized on television screens. To have seen him in his element against an equally dangerous ‘The Demon’ would surely have been a joy to witness.
