An AEW star has revealed that their contract was set to expire early next year, with time being added due to injury.

Signed to an AEW deal since February 2024, Queen Aminata was out of action due to a neck injury suffered late last year, returning to television in April.

Speaking on her recent YouTube vlog, the AEW star shared an update on her contract status, saying:

“I signed with AEW three years ago, almost three, because I’m at the end of my contract, which is next February, plus injury time, which I don’t know how long that’s going to be.”

Queen Aminata challenged for the TBS Championship on the July 1 episode of AEW Dynamite in a six-way elimination match that would be won by Hikaru Shida.

Contract Extended

Not for the first time, an AEW star’s contract is being extended due to injury time.

It’s a regular feature of contracts, regardless of the company in question, seeing stars continue to work to make up for time lost due to a previous injury.

In some cases, a contract extension doesn’t necessarily mean that substantial television time will emerge, as was seen with Danhausen in August of last year. The star hadn’t been used much on AEW or ROH television, with his deal due to expire until it was reported that injury time would be added.

There are no doubt multiple conflicting views on the process, but it can be seen as making sense for a business to want to make up for lost time in this way, pursuing a return on the investment they have made into the star in question. Outside of that, there’s an argument to be made that extending a contract allows further negotiation, should that be the direction of discussion. Cynically, it could also be seen as preventing a star from making a move elsewhere on their own terms, particularly when it’s a contract expiry over a release.

In an ideal world, stars would be healthy, not requiring any injury time adjustment, but the reality still stands that injuries happen, and a decision has to be made.

Whether Queen Aminata follows in the footsteps of Jack Perry, who recently signed a new deal, remains to be seen.
