In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer has noted that WWE is currently using a real-life lawsuit as their inspiration for one of the current SmackDown storylines.
The reports notes that the current storyline between Otis and The Miz & John Morrison has been inspired by a real-life lawsuit that featured two-time WWE Hall of Famers Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart:
Otis was backstage and got served with papers. Miz & Morrison were suing him for emotional distress and creating an unsafe working environment. In 1997 after Bret Hart beat up Shawn Michaels backstage, or at least pulled large clumps of his hair out, Michaels left and had a lawyer threaten to sue WWE for those reasons so that’s where the suing over an unsafe working environment storylines started from that actual real thing that happened.
It has been speculated that WWE is going to use this lawsuit storyline as a way to get the Money in the Bank briefcase off of Otis, with the company clearly dropping all plans they had for Otis since his big win.
