Hey, remember Asuka?
The ‘Empress of Tomorrow’ was once the most revered female performer in WWE, with a 914-day undefeated streak, including a 510-day NXT Women’s Championship reign and a win in the first ever women’s Royal Rumble match.
At WrestleMania 34, Asuka was eventually toppled by Charlotte Flair in a SmackDown Women’s Championship match, and the Japanese star hasn’t recovered since. Since losing her first match in WWE, Asuka has seen less and less TV time on Smackdown Live, and when she has shown up, it’s all been a bit cringe-worthy.
It appears as though WWE is holding off on pushing the Mixed Match Challenge season one winner because she isn’t completely fluent in the English language.
PWInsider‘s Mike Johnson said on a recent PWInsider Elite Audio that there is plenty Asuka could be doing, but she’s being held up because of the aforementioned language barrier:
“Oh there’s tons for her right now, he [Vince McMahon] just doesn’t want to. She doesn’t speak good English, I mean say what you want, but that’s the bottom line. If she spoke good English, I think she would be getting more. He [McMahon] wants you to be able to cut promos.”
Language barriers and WWE backstage staff not liking people’s accents has held wrestlers back in the past. Hopefully this issue won’t prevent Asuka from reaching her full potential.
Perhaps a manager/advocate of some sort who can speak for her would be beneficial…
WWE Evolution is scheduled for October 28, and as of this writing, Asuka is in a throwaway battle royal.
