Cody Rhodes wants to work more dates for New Japan Pro Wrestling in 2019 as reported by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
The Observer’s Dave Meltzer wrote the following regarding Cody’s future in the most recent newsletter:
“He’s already said doing a G-1 is something he wants to do, but last year his filming “Arrow” made that impossible. But he wants to do more than just the big shows like he did in 2018 with the idea that he wants to improve as a wrestler, and you want to improve as a wrestler, New Japan is the place to work. With him wanting to also expand his acting career and make his own decisions, WWE is less likely and he obviously hasn’t signed with ROH.”
Cody made his debut for New Japan Pro Wrestling at Wrestle Kingdom 11 in 2017 and since then he has mainly appeared on big shows and been off the regular tours. He notably has feuded with Kota Ibushi and Kenny Omega while his most recent program has been with Juice Robinson.
If Cody makes the decision to sign with New Japan over WWE or Ring of Honor in 2019 this would likely lead to much more time being spent wrestling in Japan.
Cody and the rest of The Elite are currently in the process of deciding whether to remain on the independent and Japanese wrestling scene or go to WWE when their contracts run out in January. This could potentially be one of the year’s biggest news stories as The Elite and especially Kenny Omega have proven themselves to be draws in the wrestling market. The decision will likely be made public on January 1st as The Elite has been teasing an announcement taking place on New Years Day on Being the Elite
