When Kurt Angle announced that his ‘farewell match’ would be against Baron Corbin at WrestleMania 35, WWE fans were extremely disappointed, instead hoping for a more high-profile opponent such as the rumoured John Cena.
It has now been revealed that Kurt Angle himself is also disappointed the company’s choice to have him face Baron Corbin, in what will be the former WWE Champion’s final ever bout. Mike Johnson of PWInsider said:
”The word we have heard is Angle was hoping for a more high-profile final opponent. His wife actually responded to some comments online about the bout being underwhelming before deleting several tweets.”
WWE also acknowledged the backlash to Angle’s announcement, and some fans speculated that this was an indication that they were planning a swerve with a more high-profile opponent in line to face the Olympic Gold Medalist. However, Mike Johnson has rebuffed those rumours, saying:
”As of last night, the announcement that Baron Corbin would be facing Kurt Angle at Wrestlemania 35 was not a swerve to lead to something else. WWE obviously was aware of the negative fan response when the announcement was made, weaving it into their commentary and even Kurt Angle’s own comments about the match on social media. They could always change course but the plan backstage before Raw was 100% Corbin vs. Angle on 4/7 at MetLife Stadium.”
Whilst it will be nice to see Kurt get some revenge over Corbin, one has to feel that a man with a storied career like Angle deserves a send-off against a superstar of a higher calibre. Instead, we are left with this extremely uninspiring matchup that does nothing for either man.
