One of the only real criticisms that fans have had with AEW since the launch of Dynamite thirteen months ago has been its booking of the women’s division, with female wrestlers in AEW often feeling like an after-thought.
During the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed the original plans that AEW higher-ups had for the promotion’s women’s division, almost all of which have been changed since.
While discussing Kylie Rae’s retirement, Meltzer noted that the former AEW star was highlighted as one of the promotion’s top female stars prior to the launch of Dynamite.
Before requesting her release from AEW, management reportedly thought very highly of Kylie Rae, with Cody even reportedly comparing her to former SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley.
Meltzer also explained that Britt Baker was going to be presented as the women’s division’s top babyface. She was reportedly pencilled as “The Chosen One” by AEW as she had a great look, good in-ring skills and could also do well in the media.
As we know, plans changed and Britt Baker turned heel as she was failing to properly get over as a babyface. She has been some fantastic work as a heel, despite being injured for several months.
It seems like AEW may be able to sign a wrestling veteran, who has recently confirmed that she is no longer under NWA contract. You can read more about that by clicking here.
