On the January 1, 2020, edition of WWE SmackDown, Big E was set to face Baron Corbin in a non-title match. During the match, Sami Zayn interfered and Corbin lost.
This set up a tag team match after Apollo Crews made the save for Big E. Backstage, Big E stated he was going to issue an open challenge for next week.
Apollo Crews, who was next to him in the interview, said he accepted the challenge. He said he wanted a shot at the title he helped Big E win.
