Top AEW Star Wins Wrestling Observer Newsletter Wrestler Of The Year

This is the time of year where the Wrestling Observer Newsletter releases their annual awards issue. These awards are voted on by their readers and are generally respected as a good representation of the business.

2020 was obviously a very difficult year to gauge due to the pandemic. However, former AEW World Champion Jon Moxley won the Lou Thesz Award for Wrestler of the Year in a landslide. Moxley finished with 883 first-place votes, 773 more than the runner-up Kenny Omega.

Moxley spent the majority of 2020 as AEW World Champion. He won the title from Chris Jericho at AEW Revolution on February 29 and held it until December 2, losing it to Kenny Omega. During his reign, he had high-profile matches with the likes of Brodie Lee, MJF, Eddie Kingston, and Brian Cage.

This is the first time Jon Moxley has won the award. He also won the awards for USA/Canada MVP, Feud of the Year for his rivalry with Eddie Kingston, Best Brawler, and finished second in Best on Interviews.

Considering this comes less than two years after Moxley left WWE, major props need to be given to Moxley for rehabbing his career so quickly and so successfully.

Of course, we do recommend you subscribe and read the full Awards issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter for a full breakdown of the 2020 Awards.
