AEW Star Reveals Inspiration To Return To Wrestling

Many thought that Christian Cage was never going to wrestle again when he retired in 2014. However, after almost seven years away, he returned at the 2021 Royal Rumble before signing with AEW.

Now, he has opened up about what inspired him to return to the ring. In short, it was seeing Edge return the year prior. Here is the quote from his interview on AEW Unrestricted, courtesy of Wrestling Inc.:

“Yeah of course, it was motivation for me, but our injuries were completely different. But it was like, If he can do it, maybe, maybe, and I never really had the itch until I watched him go out there. And I got so emotional about it because I’m a control freak, and when you go out there, you can control everything that happens. And I wanted to do so well that I was nervous that I couldn’t control the situation. So I had to walk away, and get my composure and come back, but it kind of did plant those seeds in my brain.

I put it to the side until about the summer when that unsanctioned came up, and I was like, yeah, I got it to figure this out and see if this is possible. I need to close this on my own terms, but when he hugged me at The Rumble, we didn’t say anything. That wasn’t even a planned hug or anything like that. I did my thing and turned around. He was standing there with a huge smile on his face. Made me smile and we embraced and just kind of went about our business. So it was one of those spontaneous things. It was just a great moment. Can’t write those moments.”

Christian Cage debuted for AEW at Revolution in March, marking his first non-WWE appearance since 2012.
